Can wider road bike handlebars make a difference to your ride?

I recently bought a FSA handlebar for my Giant TCR off EBAY. At $6 it was a bargain, although it wasn't carbon, it's light enough and I'm only 65kg anyway so spendng $200 on a handlebar is not high on my list of to do at the moment. The original bars were 40 cm wide and I went for a 44cm width this time. Cracking sound when out of the saddle going uphill

Recently I've been getting a 'cracking' or 'pop' sound from the front of the bike near the head tube when I push uphill. Sounds like the headtube has a crack or something, but there are a number of issues and cures for this issue with my Giant TCR. An excerpt from Bike Forums.
