Giant TCR Advanced SL 0 2012

The all-new GiantTCR Advanced SL breaks the mold of every composite bike that was built before it. Using some pretty cool Advanced SL-grade composite and groundbreaking manufacturing processes, the result is on of the lightest, stiffest Giant road frames ever produced.

You’ll be more confident on this new model as the steering precision has been greatly improved the new oversize OverDrive 2 headtube/fork combination. The MegaDrive downtube and PowerCore bottom bracket dramatically increase the power transfer and efficiency when you’re in the saddle. With the integrated seat post and RideSense ANT+ sensor for wireless data transmission, the new Giant TCR Advanced SL packs a punch and goes way ahead of its rivals.

Major upgrades from the TCR Advanced SL 1 are:- Full Dura-Ace Di2 electronic componentry
- Fi’zi:k Arione CX with braided composite rails saddle
- Giant P-SLR1 Aero WheelSystem
- Sizes: XS, S, M, M/L, L, XL

Weight How much does this bike weigh? It’s always hard to put a number to this, however Giant tell us there are no industry standards for benchmarking the exact weight of a Giant road bike. This can be misleading to some road bike riders who are primarily focussed on the total weight of the bike.

Size Head Angle Seat Angle Top Tube Head Tube Chain Stay Wheel Base Standover Height
CM Degrees Degrees CM CM CM CM Inches
XS/43.0 71 74.5 51.5 12 40.5 97.2 28.5
S/46.5 72 73.5 53.5 13.5 40.5 97.4 29.2
M/50.0 73 73 55.5 15 40.5 98 30.1
M/L/53.5 73 72.5 57 17 40.5 99.2 31
L/55.5 73 72.5 58.5 18.5 40.5 100.6 31.7
XL/58.5 73 72 60.5 20 40.5 102.1 32.4

The are variances that exist based on size, frame material, the finish and the quality of hardware. As the Giant road bike gets lighter, the weight and differences in core components become more critical. Giant believe the only way to know the weight of any Giant road bike whether it be a TCR carbon frame or a composite aluminium Defy.

The best way in my book is to head on down  to your LBS and jump on a few and see which one you prefer. Some solid advice, you can’t decide on a bike just by looking at a photograph. Enjoy the ride.

About Giant Advanced Composite Technology

Andrew Juskitis, global product marketing manager at Giant Bicycles explains the Giant advanced composite technology.

Lets get into it and find out why our bikes are better than our competitors. Starting with the front of the bike, you’ll notice that the ‘head-tube’ area is massively oversized here.

We call it ‘Overdrive’ and it uses an oversized bearing standard, with inch and an eighth on top, and inch and a quarter on the bottom. The goal of this is to achieve maximum stiffness for front end stearing stability. As we move down the bike you notice the massively oversized ‘downtube’ as well.

We call this ‘Megadrive’ Megadrive isn’t just a design feature; it’s an actual performance feature. Again, maximum stiffness attaching the headtube down to the bottom bracket area.

The three things that our racers require when they’re racing on our product is: maximally light weight, outstanding stiffness, and also comfort as well. You can tell by the headtube and the downtube that we’ve achieved that stiffness. No other are is greater in stiffness than the bottom bracket area here, using an oversized standard.

It uses the BB86 integrated bottom bracket area here, with asymmetrical chain stays. Massively oversized, extremely light-weight, and also very comfortable as well. Another interesting feature that you’ll find with advanced composite technology on this particular bike, is the integrated seat mast. Integrated seat mast technology was first established by Giant over five years ago. We continue on with that tradition with offering a seat mast that offers you 40 grams of weight savings over a traditional seat post.

You can tell with all of these features, the headtube area, the downtube and the bottom bracket area, that outstanding stiffness was goal number one, maximum lightweight was number two, and certainly no third, was comfort. A bike that’s outstandingly comfortable, very stiff and very lightweight to ride. That’s advanced composite technology.

All of these features are available on the high end but they also truckle down to the low end as well.
